Replicating the “Real Deal”: How This Group of Fans is Revolutionizing LEGO Car Design

LEGO McLaren 720s supercar designed by Peter Schott

The almost limitless variety of unique LEGO parts available to builders allow them to bring a wide range of interests to life, and many builders take their inspiration from real-world objects. Since the advent of the LEGO Technic theme in 1984, which introduced more realistic and sculpted parts into the LEGO system, adult LEGO fans around the world have been fascinated with the prospect of building authentic recreations of their favorite real-life vehicles. Brick Inspired recently pulled over Peter Schott (@lego_tactics) to tell us about his latest builds, and how he and a group of other talented builders are creating a mashup of the age-old model car hobby and their love of the LEGO brick. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’ve been building with Lego my entire life, but I have been building LEGO supercars for the last year. I’ve wanted to combine my love of cars, LEGO and photography by bringing the most realistic LEGO cars to life! During my projects, I’ve become acquainted with some of the best custom shops around the world, as well as the best designers and MOC builders. I reached out to them to help create these beautiful builds.

Pictured above is the McLaren 720s, designed by Charbel Imd. The inspiration behind the build was the real life McLaren 720s by Alex Choi, who did a custom two-tone wrap. With the help of the company Forwart Stickers, we were able to accurately capture the unique color scheme and detailing of the real supercar through this LEGO version. To add to the realism, I took the build to a parking garage for some night photography, producing the photo that you see above.

Collaboration is Key!

The second picture was a collaboration with the infamous Lachlon Cameron, (@Loxlego), who by far is the best custom LEGO vehicle designer. Many of his LEGO supercars have been featured in magazines, and on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube.

One day we brainstormed about creating the Ferrari F12 which has not been touched by the LEGO community or released as an official LEGO set, particularly in the 1:8 scale (which all these cars are). The goal was the recreate the Ferrari F12 from Daily Driven Exotics (one of YouTube’s top supercar channels). This car is well known among the supercar community.

IT WAS REALLY HARD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE BUILD…BUT THESE TWO ARE SPECIAL SINCE THEY REPLICATE THE REAL DEAL.

With the help of many individuals, I was able to present the final product which was well-received by Damon Fryer, owner of the real car. My goal is to push the limits of custom LEGO supercar design to share with this wonderful LEGO world.”

The writers at Brick are inspired every day with how fans of the brick are pushing the boundaries of art and design. If you have an inspiring build to share, please send us an email at editorial@brickinspired.com.
